Inside: An Asian inspired recipe for sesame crusted seared ahi tuna appetizer bites!
Fresh tuna has to be one of my most favorite things. Ok, ok, canned tuna is pretty awesome too…
Mr. LectinFreeFoodie found a gorgeous piece of fish at the market and decided to make an awesome ahi tuna appetizer for us to share.
Not only did it taste fantastic, but it was really beautifully presented, too. I don’t know about you, but I’m always on the hunt to find a nice Plant Paradox approved meal that I can easily serve my guests.
I’ve heard there are some amazing recipes to try in the official Plant Paradox cookbook but I haven’t gotten a copy yet….so I’ve just been adapting some of my favorite recipes to more compliant versions.
Sesame Crusted Seared Ahi Tuna Appetizer Bites
This recipe has been adapted from the great Jamie Oliver to incorporate the fresh herbs and ingredients that we had on hand or growing in our garden. I also swapped out higher lectin items (such as fresh chilis) with Plant Paradox phase 2 compliant alternatives.
I’m such a fan of his simple, delicious recipes. And I really love all the work he’s done with school lunches in a strong effort to make a positive impact on childhood obesity.
Ok, ready for something delicious?
Let’s check out the recipe for these awesome seared ahi tuna appetizer bites!
Sesame Crusted Seared Ahi Tuna Appetizer Bites
A beautifully presented, seared ahi tuna appetizer that you'll love to serve to your guests!
Ingredients
- 1 large tuna steak, about 1/2 pound
- 2 tbl sesame seeds
- 2 tsp thinly sliced garlic
- 1 tbl tamari or coconut aminos
- 2 wedges lemon or lime (about 1/2 tbl of juice)
- dash sriracha, optional
- 1/2 tsp ginger powder, or 2 tsp fresh grated ginger
- 2 stalks chives, sliced thinly
- small handful cilantro, hand torn
- sesame oil
- olive oil
Instructions
-
Slice tuna steak into 1 1/2 inch cubes
-
Place sesame seeds on a small plate, and roll tuna pieces in sesame seeds until they are well covered on 4 sides. Set aside.
-
Place a pan over medium heat, and drizzle in equal amounts of sesame oil and olive oil, lightly covering the bottom of the pan.
-
Add sliced garlic to the pan and gently saute for about 2 minutes or until garlic is nicely browned. Using a slotted spoon, remove garlic and drain on a paper towel.
-
Turn heat up to medium-high, and place the tuna pieces into the garlic-infused oil.
-
Using tongs, turn tuna pieces, and cook each side for 20-30 seconds until the sesame seed crust is lightly browned on each side. It really doesn't take much time!
-
Remove from pan and allow to cool slightly. Cut each piece into slices - about 2-3 slices per cube. Arrange slices on a serving plate.
-
In a small bowl, prepare the dressing. Mix together tamari, lemon juice, sriracha, 1 tsp of sesame oil and ginger powder.
-
Drizzle dressing over tuna, and top with chopped chives, cilantro and fried garlic as a garnish.

Yum. I wasn’t paying attention and slightly overcooked my first batch – you really DO just need 20 seconds. I loved the sauce.
I love anything with Ahi Tuna! The fact that these are bites make this dish perfect!
